Bec Brittain: Resolute

Resolute (/ˈrezəˌl(y)o͞ot/): characterized by firmness and determination, as the temper, spirit and actions.

Since founding her eponymous studio in 2011, New York based lighting designer Bec Brittain has pushed the boundaries with her showstopping American-made creations. 2017 is shaping up as a benchmark year for Brittain who, in addition to opening her own Flatiron showroom, has unveiled a number of new collections.

The Resolute series, commissioned by The Future Perfect, is Bec Brittain’s first solo show with the gallery since 2013, and our first time showing new work from her in New York. Characterized by a new sense of confidence, Brittain’s work is at once harmonious and instinctive.

Building upon her lauded SHY series, which employs thin LED tubes to create articulate and otherworldly shapes, this collection explores lighting as an architectural intervention and response to the surrounding space. “I have always seen the SHY beams as the most elemental expression of the SHY series, with so many possibilities for varying types of installations, from decorative to architectural,” says Brittain.

Across the collection, light sources become partially obscured, reflected or adorned by mirrors and colored glass, creating an interplay between materials. Among the collection’s standout pieces is the Flag Series, which juxtaposes Brittain’s signature beam lights with large, flag-shaped sheets of glass or transparent mirror. Like the Tension Beams components - which offers a more vertical perspective - the Resolute collection puts forward an entirely new visual language.

Resolute’s highly versatile and immersive components rise from floor to wall, and ceiling to floor, offering an infinite number of variations and installation options. “I hope that the pieces show that the work can really interact with and carve out space,” explains Brittain. “These pieces show that we can create space dividing screens, climb up walls and corners, while all the time being sculptural. These pieces aim to show that the installation can be more than the sum of its parts.”
