Like all things that rise from the outré imagination of creative director Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s SoHo headquarters is no ordinary retail experience. The latest component to the project, which was first unveiled back in May, is the Gucci Wooster Bookstore, a collaboration the brand forged with our friend - and longtime NoHo neighbor - David Strettell of Dashwood Books.

The result is very much a meeting of the minds, resulting in an experience that juxtaposes the lavish Gucci aesthetic with Strattell’s precise curatorial eye. The book selection - which includes plenty of under-the-radar zines and a few literature staples - focuses largely on the visual world with some 2000 volumes dedicated to photography, fashion and fine art. Among these are a number of Michele’s favorite collaborators, including photographers Martin Parr and Ryan McGinley and singer Florence Welch (represented with a special Gucci poetry book).

This being Gucci, the store feels experiential and sumptuous, resembling an old world Milanese apothecary with wooden cabinetry enlivened by bright leather armchairs and vibrant silk rugs. Exposed brick walls and cast iron pillars emphasize the SoHo location and a few well placed volumes by the likes of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Paolo Roversi serve as thoughtful reminders of the brand’s marvelous Italian roots.
