The Infinity House

June 12, 2019
By: Aaron Peasley

The Up Studio's mesmerizing Infinity House, located in Florida’s resort-centric area of Boca Raton, is a family retreat that plays with light and scale. The house is arranged into five separate zones, which, similar to a boutique hotel, offers a sense of autonomous space for all of the occupants. Given its location in South Florida, much attention has been paid to landscape and lighting design, shielding the house from the street while allowing the property’s rear to open onto panoramic water views.

The Up Studio are responsible for almost every facet of the home, including its interiors. According to company co-founder Jeff Ramirez "We decided to work with a neutral material palette that began with bringing the exterior cedar inside select areas of the home. Natural stone was also woven throughout the house, defining specific zones." From there, the company added custom millwork and a series of highly textural layers to add complexity and depth to each area. Among the other standout pieces including those from some of The Future Perfect’s most beloved artists. “Our studio loved the lines of the Agnes collection from Lindsey Adelman and selected a few pieces for the “public” spaces of the home,” explained Ramirez, “It was fun watching the chandeliers go up and transform the spaces. The Ryosuke Yazaki sculptures were also studio favorites. Setting those down and seeing them inhabit the nearly completed space was a beautiful finishing touch.”

What was the jumping off point for the Infinity House?

The Infinity House is a family retreat where we had the opportunity to study scale. The house is arranged into five separate zones allowing us to breakdown the overall massing and creating a sense of ownership for all of the occupants, similar to a boutique hotel. Additionally the front and rear of the house are treated differently to react to site conditions. The front is surrounded by landscape to shield it from the street while the rear of the property is open to the water allowing the interior and exterior to merge. Finally, due to the extreme Florida summer sun, a cantilevered shell integrates sun shading and exterior living space with a single gesture.

Can you talk us through your approach to the interiors?

We decided to work with a neutral material palette that began with bringing the exterior cedar inside select areas of the home. Natural stone was also woven throughout the house, defining specific zones. The larger volumes and circulation areas were kept white which also ties back to the stucco color on the exterior. Overall, it was important for us to keep a consistency between the outdoor and indoor spaces without distracting from the lush natural environment surrounding the home. Finish materials, custom millwork and furnishings were all drawn and selected by the team to add textural layers to the project, emphasizing programmatic organization and contribute to the clean, minimal aesthetic.

What were some of the standout pieces chosen, including those from The Future Perfect?

This was a very special project for our studio. In addition to designing the home inside and out, we selected all the interior furnishings including decorative lighting, furniture, kitchenware, linens, artwork and accessories (even the toothbrushes [seriously!]). Our studio loved the lines of the Agnes collection from Lindsey Adelman and selected a few pieces for the “public” spaces of the home.

It was fun watching the chandeliers go up and transform the spaces. The Ryosuke Yazaki sculptures were also studio favorites. Setting those down and seeing them inhabit the nearly completed space was a beautiful finishing touch.
